Update from the Course

Still a bit wet under foot on the course but at least we’ve had the sun out for a couple of days now. I will keep the “carts on path” rule in play until Thursday due to the softness of the ground, especially the area just off the cart paths. The course is drying out; all be it slowly and I don’t want to risk any damage from motorised carts, knowing there will be no turf recovery for the next 4 months. Several of the green surrounds have failed to drain at all so hopefully the blue line deters any vehicles from entering these boggy areas.

On Wednesday we aerated all the greens with 6mm solid tines. With the putting surface being constantly wet over the past month and all pore spaces in the profile filled with water, there was an opportunity to help out the greens by punching in tines to a depth of 75mm. This process will increase the air exchange in the soil, relieve compaction and break through any black layer in the profile. From a golfing point of view, disturbance to the putting surface is minimal as the greens will be double rolled immediately after the aeration process.

With the arrival of our new bunker sand, we were able to replace the sand from the scalloped out greenside traps on the 8th and 13th holes. We filled the base of these bunkers to a depth of 75mm of the new sand and 50mm went on the faces. We compacted the sand on the faces with “Wacker packers” and broomed to a smooth finish. If the golfers manage to stay off the faces of these bunkers, they will compact over time resulting in no “poached eggs”.

The weather has put our monthly fert and growth retardant programme on fairways behind by a couple of weeks. The new retardant called “Marvel – ous” has lived up to its name and reputation and has kept the growth on hold despite unsuitable conditions. We managed to fertilise all fairways and green surrounds over the Tuesday / Wednesday period.

All in all, the course is still playable despite a ridiculous amount of rainfall. The greens are strong and healthy coming into the cooler months and rolling true. Several mowing days have been replaced by rolling which in turn produces firmer faster greens. This practice also takes the stress off the greens which in turn is a win win situation for everybody.

See you on course,
Glenn Beauclerc.
Your Friendly Course Superintendent.

Emma

The Team Behind Links

Say hello to Emma, one of the friendly faces behind the wheel of the Links drinks cart! If you've ever had a cold refreshment delivered with a smile mid-round, chances are Emma was behind it.

Emma grew up right here on the Gold Coast and it’s safe to say she’s always been on the move! From state-level swimming to representing in touch footy, Oz tag, AFL, and netball, she’s got a seriously sporty streak. Before joining us, she managed a McDonald’s, but she was ready for a change—and we’re lucky she found her way to Links Golf & Wellbeing almost two years ago.

What drew her to the job? "Driving around the course, serving food, and building relationships with the members." Sounds like the dream job, right?

A typical day in Emma’s world includes loading up the drinks cart with ice, stocking up on goodies, and heading out to spread cheer across the course. Her favourite part? “Making people smile.” Mission accomplished, Emma!

One of her most memorable moments was a very serious golf question from a player: “Which way is the wind blowing?” Emma’s confident reply “across” was all they needed. Meteorologist in the making we feel!

When she was little, Emma dreamed of being an actress. These days, she’s more into pilates and colouring in when she’s off-duty.

Her pick from the Golf Shop? “The cute fluffy headcovers”—great for your clubs and your vibe.

We love Emma’s best advice: “Do things for yourself and not anyone else.” And if she could have one superpower? Reading minds. (“Because I think it would be funny!”) We agree, Emma—imagine the entertainment!

Thanks for always bringing the good vibes, Emma. You’re an absolute gem.

Please Consider your Speed

A friendly reminder to all members and guests to keep cart speeds to a safe level, particularly when carts on paths conditions are in place. We've noticed an increase in the speed of private carts around the course, which raises safety concerns for fellow players, other cart users and course staff. Fast-moving carts can also cause damage to the cart path edges and surrounding green space. Please take extra care and drive at a controlled pace when using the cart paths around the golf course.

Your cooperation helps keep the course safe, enjoyable, and in great condition for everyone.
