Update from the CourseThe mornings this week have been a little cooler with Winter
just around the corner. We have been setting up for the change of seasons by
implementing our pre-emergent herbicide programme. Once the nighttime
temperatures fall below 10 degrees it will trigger the germination of Winter
grass (poa annua) in all the playing surfaces. Already we have seen
evidence of this germination in some of the low-lying areas on course due to
the amount of moisture in the ground. The sprinklers around the greens is
another favourite spot for early poa annua (pictured) to stick
its head up. To combat this, we have sprayed all greens and green surrounds
with a pre-emergent herbicide called Pronamide which when washed into the soil
creates a barrier killing any shoots or roots that germinate from the poa
annua seed. With the forecast of another wet weekend coming and up to
40mm predicted we will hold off on the spraying of the fairways and tees until
next week. Being a pre-emergent barrier, we are creating the last thing I want
to do is have this very expensive barrier washed away or worse still washed
into drains or creeks. We are close to completing the bunker refill project with
very positive feedback from members and guests who have already had the
“pleasure” of playing out of the completed greenside bunkers on holes 8 and 13. The construction of the 18th tee and surrounds is
coming along well; all be it a bit slow with the weather not suitable for
construction. We are currently in the reshaping stage before the tee will be
sand capped then layed with solid turf. Fortunately, the soil used in this project is from the carpark dig out at the clubhouse and the
sand being utilised is the old sand dug out from the bunkers on holes 4, 8, 13 and 16……………it’s called
recycling! See you on course, Glenn Beauclerc. Your Friendly Course Superintendent. |
