Junior Pennant Round 2 Roundup Junior Pennant – Round 2 Handicap Team This week Links Golf & Wellbeing handicap team played
against Southport at Emerald Lakes. We thought all opponents were going to be
tough, the team managed to come through with a win - couldn't be any prouder of
how they all played and the respect and determination by all players. Noah McLaren finished all square with a very back and forth
match, but on the 18th he hit a very tricky chip over a bunker to put the ball
a foot from the hole to bring the match back to square. Alex Nieuwoudt - gave 2 shots in his match to his opponent
finishing off on the 18th all square. Clinton Wong - fantastic play by Clinton as is every week,
winning 7 & 6 to play. Annie Ritchie - Won 4 & 3 to play with a few things
happening during her match that could put anyone off the game but she kept her
cool and brought the win home for her and the team. Ashleigh King- Ashleigh surprises every week, she was 4
down at the turn and lost some confidence due to her opponent being very
confident. She fought back to bring it to the 18th hole, she picked her shots
and executed them perfectly, she chipped within a foot of the hole for the parr
to put the pressure back on her opponent but she took the putt and had the win.
Player of the day I'm sure everyone there supporting them would all agree
Ashleigh deserves player of the day Ryder Mitchell - great match winning 5 up, good to see Ryder
loving this format of match play. Ryder is playing against players that are on
a much lower handicap than him and he still has managed to take the win every
week. Ryder's current handicap does not reflect his current playing abilities. Finishing with a birdie to win his match for the day. Junior Pennant – Round 2 Scratch Team Round 2 of the Junior Scratch Pennants saw our Links Golf
& Wellbeing scratch team take on the highly respected Coolangatta Tweed
team at Emerald Lakes Golf Club. Teeing off at 2pm in challenging windy conditions, our young
team showed incredible composure and determination, producing golf that drew
high praise from both the opposition and supporters alike. David vs. Goliath – putting It into Perspective The Coolangatta Tweed side fielded a powerful team with an
average age close to 21 and four players off +1 to +4 handicaps. By contrast, our Hope Island juniors averaged under 15 years
of age with handicaps between 2 and 6. Despite the mismatch on paper, our team
never backed down and proved that heart, belief, and teamwork can level any
playing field. Match Highlights After some tightly contested early matches, Cooly took an
early 3–0 lead despite brave performances from Damien
Zervas (6), Chloe
Kennedy (5) and Rayne
Soderlund (4) Each match went deep into the back nine, showcasing grit and
resilience right to the end. Momentum swung when Robert Niewoudt (3) delivered a stunning
performance, highlighted by a chip-in hole-out and clutch long putts to claim a
2 & 1 victory over his plus-handicap opponent. Then came one of the biggest moments of the day, Carter
Botha (2) produced a standout 3 & 2 win, playing golf that far exceeded his
years. Carter was two under the card for much of the match, an incredible
achievement given the conditions and opposition. With the team rallying, Mathew Zhang (1) stepped up in the
final match against a +4, 21-year-old opponent. After falling 2 down early,
Matt clawed his way back to go 2 up after the turn. As the light faded and cart
headlights illuminated the 17th green, Matt hit a perfect tee shot, calmly
two-putted for par, and secured the hole, ensuring the team finished with a
well-deserved 3–3 draw. Pride, Sportsmanship, and Team Spirit The result was impressive, but what stood out most was the
respect, maturity, and sportsmanship our juniors displayed throughout the day.
Their conduct on and off the course earned genuine admiration from the
opposition and all in attendance. Every member of the Links Golf & Wellbeing Junior team
represented our club with pride, skill, and humility, proving that while they
may be small in stature, their character and competitive spirit are immense. Final Score: Hope Island 3 – Coolangatta Tweed 3 An inspiring and memorable performance that reflects
everything we stand for at Links Golf & Wellbeing. Teamwork, Respect, and Belief. Congratulations to our juniors, families, and support team. You’ve made the entire club proud. |
