Update from the Course

Another wet weekend with 63mm falling on Saturday night putting carts on paths and all bunkers GUR. Spare a thought for the maintenance team who spent 4 days rejuvenating all bunkers last week only to see the faces washed away Sunday morning. We declared them all out of play Monday but to the boy's credit they pushed them all up again, broomed the faces, raked the bases, and had them already for play for the Tuesday competition.

Greens are progressing nicely with our focus still being the encouragement of the thinner areas to cover up through dusting and granular fertiliser. We have just received back the cutting cylinders from the manufacturers after they were sent away to be ground and new bed knives installed. This has improved the quality of cut tenfold and with there new height of cut at 3.25mm are starting to roll more consistently.

Below are the latest machinery assets purchased by Links Golf and Wellbeing for the improvement of the course today and into the future. We have traded in our old bobcat as it was no longer viable to spend more money on repairs and maintenance and have upgraded to a new S590 Bobcat. This machine will be used everyday throughout the course and is a welcome addition to our fleet. We have also taken purchase of a new Kubota U17-3 excavator much to the delight of Josh, our irrigation technician, who has been digging holes by hand for the past 12 months, fixing leaks and blowouts on a daily basis. This machine will hasten the time for repairs and also be used for construction and maintenance of future projects.

See you on course,
Glenn Beauclerc
Your Friendly Course Superintendent

What's the buzz...

Well, the rain certainly hasn't stopped the bees from going about their work with both hives bursting at the seems on our inspection last Friday. The good news was they hadn't built into the hive lid and with the top 9 frames in the honey super 100% capped and ready for extraction it wouldn't have been long before we unveiled a sticky mess. This is why we carry out fortnightly inspections just to get a handle on exactly what's happening in the hive.

We will do a much unexpected honey extraction this Friday to once again create more room within the hive. They are very busy little bees and certainly have thrived at Links Golf and Wellbeing since their arrival.

Honey will be available for purchase from next Tuesday the 28th of January.

Fun fact: Did you know that bees are also fantastic boogiers!!

To let all the other worker bees in the hive know exactly where the pollen or nectar is on a particular tree, they communicate when they return back into the hive by doing a figure 8 Waggle dance in front of all the bees. The direction of the dance indicates north, east, south or west and the number of times they bounce their abdomen on the floor of the hive indicates the distance to travel.  Pretty cool huh!

Extreme Heat Warning

As we are experiencing warmer than usual conditions on the Gold Coast over the next couple of days, it is essential to prioritise your safety and wellbeing. Please take extra precautions to stay sun smart, apply sunscreen, stay hydrated (the drinks car is always available on the course), and seek shade under one of the many trees, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

If you have any concerns when you are out on the course, please reach out to one of the marshals or contact the golf shop team.

Stay cool and safe

Blue Cart Directional Signage and Lines.

Please remember to adhere to the new Blue Cart Directional Signs and Lines recently instated on course.  Since the introduction of the Visage 4 GPS system in September, we have been able to keep club carts well away from putting greens and surrounds, however we are still noticing too much cart wear close to greens.  The purpose of the blue lines is to make it absolutely clear where carts can be driven, the direction they are driven in and how far carts are to remain from surrounds and putting surfaces, so please, adhere to the direction of the arrows on the signs and do not cross the blue lines when driving a cart on course.  Staff will be policing this and in addition, we ask the lowest marker in each group to take responsibility for ensuring all members of the group adhere to the rule.  Please play your part in allowing us to deliver the quality of playing surface we all want to see.
