Cyclone Alfred Update - Club Closure 5:00 pm Today

As you will be aware we are currently under Cyclone Warning for Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which at the time of writing is forecast to cross the coast in South-East QLD, near Brisbane, late tomorrow night or early Friday morning. Regardless of its exact landfall location, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast regions are expected to experience severe weather conditions, including:

  • Wind gusts of up to 150 km/h
  • Heavy rainfall of up to 750 mm
  • Possible flash flooding and hazardous road conditions

Given these conditions, and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our staff, members and guests, we have made the decision to close the club from 5:00pm TODAY, Wednesday 5 March. This includes the golf course, clubhouse and cafe, Yoga Now studio and Champions Hair Beauty Day Spa.

We will remain closed throughout Thursday and Friday and will re-evaluate the situation prior to the weekend.

We will provide regular updates on our website, social media pages, and email notifications regarding any changes to our scheduled activities as soon as we are able.

Thank you for your understanding, please take care and stay safe during this severe weather event.

Sincerest Regards

Management

Update from the Course

Well, I guess we're all battening down the hatches in readiness for Cyclone Alfred to cross the coast. Given the area from the Bureau of Meteorology this could take place as far north as the Sandy Cape and as far South as Byron Bay and everything in between. What does this mean as far as our week in preparation goes for the golf course?

Well, it's been rather hectic from Monday morning 4am, where we commenced a double verticut at +2mm on all greens, followed by a double cut off with the green's mowers at 3mm to clean up any thatch and dead material. At the same time four of the other maintenance team were flat out brush cutting and edging all bunkers before weeding, blowing, brooming and finally raking back into play. Our plan is to complete as many bunkers as possible before the forecasted deluge arrives. On their way around the team has been brush cutting and cleaning all drains and gully pits making sure flood waters find their way off the paths and fairways and can exit the course via the waterways.

Currently we are still down to one fairway mower so it's vital that machine stays out every day. If we can get over all the fairways before the rain hits it will be a minor miracle, but we'll certainly be giving it our best shot. Tees received a cut on Tuesday and look sensational and we will endeavour to get all the tee surrounds cut by Wednesday as these areas always take the longest to dry out and get machinery back onto. The greens are looking a treat and the definition between greens, step cuts and surrounds really excites me at the moment. The height of cut from these three areas goes from 3mm to 8mm to 12mm and looks outstanding.

17th hole

The 17th hole after a veriticut and mow off

18th hole

Both 17th and 18th holes looking fantastic

As a golf course we are heading into uncharted waters over the next few days, but we have prepared the best we can on the course and around our maintenance facility shed. Anything that can become a flying weapon has been put away and any loose items outside the shed have been secured or brought inside. Fingers crossed it all just fizzles out and becomes a rain depression and we will be back out on course real soon.

To everybody, PLEASE be safe and take care over the coming days.

See you on Course,

Glenn Beauclerc.

Your Friendly Course Superintendent.

Nearest the Pin Markers

As discussed and agreed with the Members Advisory Committee at our recent meeting, the MiScore method will remain in place for recording NTP's but to help reduce time and provide a visible aid to determine if it is worth measuring a potential NTP shot, markers will be returned to greens Tuesday 4th March.
