Update from the Course

A wet weekend with 140mm falling here on course. The gauge had 76mm by 4am Saturday morning so the team made the decision to abort cutting the greens and with the bunkers full of water they were all classed as GUR. Holes were changed and tee markers set up for anyone that wanted to don flippers and try to play 18 holes. Another 64mm Sunday morning but nothing of great significance in the previous 8hrs so we managed to cut and roll greens for the final of the Division 1 Men's pennant. Despite the atrocious weather that had been the greens held up well and putted truly.

With our sand / gypsum blend too wet for topdressing on Monday we decided to change our attack from dusting to aeration instead. All greens were aerated with 6mm solid tines commencing at 4am Monday morning followed by a triple roll to smooth out the surface. The entire process took about 6 hours with minimal disturbance to any golfers. The last time we did any aeration of greens was back in November, so they were well and truly overdue for some loving. The reason we solid tine is to increase the oxygen exchange in the profile, relief compaction and create a void for fungicides to travel into the root zone of the turf.

Aerate 14th Green

This photo shows the difference between aeration and rolled surface and just aerated. The left hand side has been aerated and rolled. The right hand side only aerated.

Solid Tine Punching

Solid tine punching through the black organic later on the 14th green, creating a channel for roots to follow as well as allowing chemicals, water and oxygen to get down below this level
