Update from the Course

Once again, the weather gods were not on our side with 60mm recorded over the Monday / Tuesday period. We honestly didn’t need that amount of rainfall as the ground was still at saturation point and struggling to dry out with the daytime temperatures in the low 20’s. Too wet to even get the greens mowers out of the shed on Monday we continued with the sprinkler trimming, valve box locating and drainage pit unblocking. Unfortunately, carts will have to remain on the paths for a few days until the course dries out to protect the course from excessive wear and tear.

We have finally got the turf laid on the 18th tee and surrounds (see photos below) and I must admit it has come up a treat. This is a far more attractive way to complete your round of golf than what was previously there. We will try to complete the mulching of this area during the week, before we undergo the mass plantings of the Pennisetum grasses. We also laid turf on the bare areas on the 3rd fairway in an effort to quicken up the recovery of this area.

On Wednesday all greens were given a foliar fertiliser brew consisting of High K, Rapid Uptake and Triple Sil. Once again this formulation is to stregthen the turf during these cold days and lessening daylight. We have raised the height of cut to 4mm for the Winter period to help reduce the stress on the greens. Speed obviously hasn’t been affected with fast true putts still evident on course.

See you on course,
Glenn Beauclerc.
Your Friendly Course Superintendent.

The Team Behind Links...

Ben has been keeping Links Golf and Wellbeing in pristine condition for the past three years, and it’s safe to say he loves every minute of it. Drawn to the role by his passion for the outdoors and heavy machinery, Ben finds real satisfaction in everything from mowing and spraying to large-scale earthworks and irrigation.

A typical day for Ben kicks off early with tasks like mowing greens or rolling fairways, followed by bigger projects that test his skills, one of the most memorable being the construction of the third tee area. The scale of the project and the teamwork involved left a lasting impression.

With a childhood dream of becoming a race car driver, it’s no surprise that Ben is passionate about engines, machinery, and engineering. He’s currently working towards perfecting his excavator skills and hopes to one day be in a position to teach the next generation of turf professionals.

Outside of work, you’ll find Ben hiking or cranking up the heavy metal – Metallica and Black Sabbath are favourites, and he’d choose time travel as his superpower just to see them live in their prime. His top turf tip? Water management is everything, and the best advice he’s ever received is to fuss over the little details because they really do matter.

With future travel plans to the Rocky Mountains and a steady focus on skill development, Ben brings both dedication and drive to the Links team.

Super Senior Pennant Call Up

Invitations are now open for all interested Super Senior players, 60 years and over, to nominate for the upcoming Super Senior Pennant competition. With 12 teams from the Gold Coast competing in two groups of six, it should be a great series.

Five matches are played on consecutive Mondays beginning Monday 18th August, finishing Monday 15 September. Semifinals (22nd September) and the final (29th September) will follow the round robin series.

A team of 8 players compete in Matchplay off the GA Handicap, 4 playing singles and 4 playing 4BBB. The maximum number of shots you give/receive is capped at 9, this means we are looking for a wide range of handicap golfers including the 'low markers'.

Players who are over 60 and have played in this years' Senior Pennant series are also eligible to play in the Super Seniors.

We need a squad of about 15 players. If you would like to register, please leave your name, phone number, shirt size and GA handicap with the Golf Shop by Monday 28th July at the latest.

For any further details, please contact Russell Donald on 0418 235 746.

Senior Pennant Team Wins Again

On a very soaked Lakelands course with misty rain falling for most of the day, the Senior Pennant team had another great win against Emerald Lakes 5 ½  to ½ in round two of the competition.

Wins to Michael Hoffmeier, Mark Quinn, Roger Worms, Greg Shipton, Richard Byrne, with Adam Baker making a great par on the last to finish square. A great team result in very trying conditions.

In the cutthroat series with only 1 game to go, the win will get us straight into the semi finals.

Thanks again to Jamie Turner and Jay Carter for keeping us updated all day on the matches.

Next week we take on the very strong team Burleigh at Southport.

Course Care Reminders

A friendly reminder to all members to please repair your pitch marks on the greens and rake bunkers properly after use.

Unrepaired pitch marks can damage the turf, create uneven putting surfaces, and take weeks to heal. A quick repair helps keep the greens smooth and fair for everyone.

Likewise, neatly raking bunkers after play ensures other golfers aren’t left with poor lies or footprints to deal with. For instructions on how to do this, Links Golf & Wellbeing Course Superintendent, Glen Beauclerc has put together a quick "how to guide" on efficiently and correctly raking a bunker.

These simple actions go a long way in keeping our course in top condition. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our club in the best condition for everyone.
