From the Course....

Week three of the recovery from renovations and we are travelling along nicely. All greens were top-dressed again on Monday before being rubbed in. Unfortunately, our start time was delayed by one and a half hours due to some mechanical adjustments with the top dresser meaning we were topdressing and rubbing in amongst the golfers which couldn’t be helped. I do apologize for any inconvenience, but I think most of the field really didn’t mind at all, so thanks to all those involved for your understanding. I am extremely happy with the growth of the greens after three weeks so much so that we have already lowered the height of cut from 5mm to 4mm and will continue to lower the heights over the next month.

The 2nd and 14th greens have responded well to the renovation and are on a level par with the other greens. The smell of death that came from the 2nd green when being aerated was something to behold. It was most satisfying to remove the dead de-oxygenated soil in the form of a black layer from the profile all together. This green will only improve now the root system can stretch out into new clean sand rather than marine mud.

Unfortunately, we got hit with Sod Web Worm in the second week of recovery on both tees and greens. The signs of damage were evident from this soft bodied worm when we noticed areas around the core holes being eaten out in a distinctive pattern. This worm is very lazy and only eats out from his burrow in a different direction each night. The damage if not rectified is the loss of a green surface over the period of a week. We applied an application on all greens and tees Thursday night after it was noticed Thursday morning.

Results from the first application of MSMA on the fairways were easy to see. This too was a great result with the targeted weeds all feeling the effects of round one and should be well and truly knocked out come the end of round three. The weeds we are targeting for this program are:

Blue couch

Paspalum

Kikuyu

Summer grass

Carpet grass

There is obviously still a phototoxic burn of the host plant (Winter green couch) which is normal with this herbicide but if we can keep the moisture levels up in the soil through irrigation and the traditional Summer storms the recovery will be noticeable in the coming weeks. The green surrounds have now received their first application as well so expect them to go off by the weekend.

We are trying our hardest to spray out all the weeds from cart path gardens, tee gardens and the boundary fencelines but there’s a big area to cover so please bare with us. With every staff member required to stay on top of the mowing rescheme, the little one percenters like garden spraying seems to be put on hold. This week and last week I have dedicated two staff members for the entire week trying to spray each nine. We will get there eventually……………. and then have to start all over again.

The third fairway is looking a lot better with another 12 tonnes of sand rubbed into the surface during the week. Followed up with a granular fertilizer, it is starting to resemble a fairway for the first time in a long time.
