Deb 20 Years

Celebrating 20 Years

This week we were delighted to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone for one of our team members – Deb Hii, our much-loved Accounts Assistant, who has officially reached 20 years working at Links.

Over the past two decades, Deb has been an integral part of the Links family, contributing her expertise, dedication, and warm spirit to everything she does. In her time with us, she has witnessed – and helped guide – countless changes across the club, from the early days through to the vibrant community hub that Links Golf & Wellbeing is today.

To mark this incredible achievement, the team came together for a special morning tea in Deb’s honour. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on her journey, share memories, and show our appreciation for her years of service.

Deb, we are so grateful for your hard work, loyalty, and positivity over the years. You truly embody the spirit of Links, and we are lucky to have you as part of our team.

Here’s to the next chapter – and to many more milestones to come!

What's the Buzz

A recent inspection of our hives on course revealed more than we expected when the bees had filled all frames with capped honey and once again started to free form in the roof of the hives. We made the call to come back the next day for a honey extraction so as to free up room in the hive.

This is what you call a very full beehive

August and September is traditionally “Swarm season” for bees and beekeepers in Queensland. Bees swarm as a natural mechanism to increase bee numbers and insure a healthy population.  Generally, bees swarm as a result of an overcrowded hive. Our job as beekeepers is to manipulate the bee’s way of mind by creating room in the hive through honey extraction and the removal of brood frames in the bottom brood box and replacing these with empty wax foundation sheets. This keeps the queen bee happy with plenty of room created to lay more eggs.

If by chance you see any large bee swarms on course while playing golf, please call myself or the pro-shop and we will do our best to catch the swarm and set them up in a new hive on course.

Honey will be available from Tuesday next week at Reception.

Super Senior Pennant 2025

The 2025 GCDGA Super Senior Pennant series got underway on Monday up on Tambourine Mt.

Our team got off to a great start to the season with a 4 - 2 win over Palm Meadows.

Our next match is against Surfers Paradise at Southport on Monday 25th August, teeing off from 9am.

If you are in the Southport area on Monday, we would love for you to come and support our players.

Ladies Pennant Results

Our Pennant Ladies played at Helensvale last Monday and finished with some mixed results. Division 4 team had a strong 4 to 1 win over Burleigh Heads. Div 5 picked up a 3 to 2 win while the Div 6 ladies unfortunately went down 3½ / to 1½.

Next Monday will be the final round of our short season. Looking at the overall results we have the Div 4 team in second position with the final result hanging on the outcome of next week’s matches. The Div 5 and Div 6 teams are both sitting in 4th position.

All ladies who have played in the 2025 Pennant series will enjoy lunch at Emerald Lakes next Monday, courtesy of the WGGC.

UPDATE FROM THE COURSE

Here we go again talking about the weather and once again the deluge that’s forecasted to hit the Gold Coast this week. The latest forecasts are predicting up to 100mm which to be honest is about 100 more than we need at the present time. In preparation for this rain event, we have cut all fairways and green surrounds on Monday and Tuesday along with all tee surrounds and the rough on holes 15 and 16. If we are to receive the rain forecasted will not be able to get the machinery on these areas for quite some time.

Monday also saw the application of gypsum to all the greens and step cuts. Gypsum is used to strip the sodium from the soil as well as break up any clay particles in the profile. As a guideline with irrigation water the ideal sodium levels for turf are between 0 – 50ppm (parts per million). The sodium level of our irrigation water pumped in from the Coombabah treatment plant is around1300ppm. After recent laboratory testing of both the water and growing medium in the greens, it was calculated that we require 1 tonne of gypsum per hectare per month. So, with two hectares of greens, step cuts and nurseries we need 2 tonnes of gypsum to be applied monthly to aid in the reduction of sodium in the greens. This is achieved through granular application as we did on Monday, dusting greens on a weekly basis with a sand / gypsum blend and soil drenching monthly with products such as Gypflo and Cal 40.

We are seeing terrific results on the fairways from the recent fertiliser / herbicide brew with a distinct definition between the rough and fairway. The fairways have taken on a deep green appearance thanks to the 20:0:0 fertiliser and the Mullumbimby couch is slowly dying off with a great result from the Nutmeg herbicide applied.

The forecasted rain might hold back the completion of the 9th bunker refill, but the team are trying there hardest to complete the works. We have introduced temporary GUR drop zones for all bunkers on this hole until the scope of works is complete. To keep the speed of play at pace and more importantly you golfers happy, all these drop zones are playable with your putter!

See you on course,
Glenn Beauclerc.
