Despite the mornings still being a tad chilly the slightly
warmer daytime temperatures have kick started the Spring growth. This week we
had all three rough mowers out on course tidying up the areas that haven’t been
touched for several months. Going forward if we stay on top of the roughs, it
not only helps in course presentation but also aids in speed of play. Fairways and green surrounds
are still at this stage only being cut once per week with monthly applications of
“Marvellous” a growth retardant now back in our spray programme. On Monday all
fairways were given a foliar fertiliser which was a brew consisting of the following……… - 20:0:0 (nitrogen-based fertiliser for colour and leaf growth)
- Sempra (herbicide
for the control of Mullumbimby couch)
- Marvellous (growth
retardant)
- Spreadwet (a
non-ionic wetter that helps stick the herbicide to the weed)
- Iron chelate (EDTA,
a chelating agent that binds to iron keeping them dissolved and accessible to
the grass in the soil)
The addition of the iron chelate EDTA to the tank mix is a
new one. What we are trying to achieve is more longevity and colour from the
iron product. Traditionally iron may
leach from the plant and soil after a couple of weeks, with this ETDA
formulation we should see at least 4 weeks of vibrant colour from this new
technology. All greens this week received a springtime boost with a feed
of “Propeat 17:0:3”. This is a natural carbon based, extended-release
fertiliser that bonds nutrients to carbon found naturally occurring in peat
moss. This is the base fertiliser coming out of the cooler months to promote
more dense growth of the greens and works in terrifically with our fortnightly
foliar fertiliser programme. Green height of cut
was lowered another half a millimetre this week with the focus being on the
upcoming Club Championships starting Saturday September 13. With warmer days
and some sunshine on their backs the greens will respond well from our
implemented programmes. Once again green speed will be the focal point of this
year’s championships. Our goal is simple…… to provide a sensational putting
surface with firm and fast greens consistent throughout the 18 holes. Starting Thursday, we have implemented a repair hole of the
day on both the front and back nines. As the sign says, “Please fill in your
divot and 5 others on this hole”. This is just another step forward trying to
create better playing surfaces with faster recovery for a more enjoyable round
of golf. See you on course. Glenn Beauclerc Your Friendly Course Superintendent. |
