Update from the Course

Firstly, I just wanted to thank our course Assistant Superintendent Scott Parker for taking care of the course and maintenance team over the past two weeks whilst I was on annual leave. Everything ran smoothly, all tasks and projects were carried out and more importantly my phone didn’t ring off the hook! Thanks Scotty and thanks to my team for showing him the respect he has earnt.

It’s been a couple of busy weeks with the Winter projects still in full swing. The team has continued with the replacement of sand in the greenside bunkers on holes 2,3,5 and 6. Once again this project saw all the existing sand removed by hand off the face of the bunkers until the bunker lining fabric was exposed. This sand was then shovelled into one large pile before being removed from the bunker with our excavator. The drainage lines were then inspected and flushed if necessary. We are utilising the sand from the bunkers for the construction of a new championship tee on the back of the 8th hole. In some situations where the sand is relatively clean (for example the pot at the back of the 3rd green) we have utilised this material to top up some of the fairway bunkers that were getting a little low.

The Driving Range has received a much overdue tidy up with the entire maintenance team committed to the task after seeking permission to have the range closed for half a day to carry out the works. Armed with chainsaws, brush cutters, mowers, mulch and herbicide, the team mowed, slashed and cut down everything that was out of place before spraying a blanket of roundup on the surrounding gardens and then heavily mulching the area. Over 70 Murrayas were planted around the new bitumen carpark which now clearly defines the area. New turf was laid around the driving range mats as a result of heavy traffic over the years causing bare sunken areas. Now complete the driving range presents a whole lot neater but unfortunately doesn’t make you hit any straighter!

On course we carried out our monthly foliar fertiliser application on all fairways and green surrounds. The brew contained a nitrogen-based fertiliser for colour and growth (20:0:0) with the addition of a herbicide (Sempra) for the control of Mullumbimby couch. In the past the use of pigments or dyes have been used to enhance the colour of the fairways, but I truly believe the results of our fertiliser programmes are producing a very healthy plant without the need to colour in fairways.

Talking of fairways, I am very happy to announce the arrival of our two new fairway mowers to our machinery fleet. We have just taken delivery of two new Toro 5610 fairway units. These machines are diesel over hydraulic replacing our previous hybrid units. What that means in short is these new machines have a diesel engine, and the cutting units are hydraulically driven. Our previous machines had a smaller diesel engine, and the cutting units were battery driven. The biggest advantage of this change in cutting unit power is not only the better quality of cut on the fairways but also the ability to be able to use these mowers for scarifying green surrounds during our annual renovations. And as you all know, the more thatch we can remove from the green surrounds the better the quality of turf in these areas.

Super Senior Pennant Call Up

Invitations are now open for all interested Super Senior players, 60 years and over, to nominate for the upcoming Super Senior Pennant competition. With 12 teams from the Gold Coast competing in two groups of six, it should be a great series.

Five matches are played on consecutive Mondays beginning Monday 18th August, finishing Monday 15 September. Semifinals (22nd September) and the final (29th September) will follow the round robin series.

A team of 8 players compete in Matchplay off the GA Handicap, 4 playing singles and 4 playing 4BBB. The maximum number of shots you give/receive is capped at 9, this means we are looking for a wide range of handicap golfers including the 'low markers'.

Players who are over 60 and have played in this years' Senior Pennant series are also eligible to play in the Super Seniors.

We need a squad of about 15 players. If you would like to register, please leave your name, phone number, shirt size and GA handicap with the Golf Shop by Monday 28th July at the latest.

For any further details, please contact Russell Donald on 0418 235 746.
