Update from the Course

The rain has been a blessing over the past week with a total of 87mm recorded. With moisture back in the ground it provided an excellent opportunity to complete the 3rd application of MSMA on all greens and step cuts. The results on the Blue Couch were excellent but I’m sure a lot of this couch has become immune to herbicide applications over the past decade, making our task near impossible for full weed eradication.

On Monday we applied 1.2 tonnes of a granular fertiliser called 2spec 23:1:10 to all tees and tee surrounds. Despite the rain we had incurred we still watered in with 20 minutes of irrigation to ensure there was no leaf burn. This fertiliser will encourage new healthy growth and thicken up the canopy of turf ideally for tee renovations in the coming weeks. A granular fertiliser provides the base nutrition the turf is requiring, and we add to that by foliar feeding every fortnight.

All greens have had their second verticut during the week. Verti cutting as the name would suggest is the vertical cutting of the grass rather than traditional horizontal mowing. These Verti cutting blades remove dead leaves and debris from within the grass canopy allowing more sunlight, air and water into the plants growing zone. More importantly what it is removing is the material that harbours pests and disease. These Verti cutting heads are the same heads we will be using on the greens for this year’s renovations. The only difference being the height of cut they are set at. For fortnightly Verti cutting we set the height at plus 1mm and for scarifying during renovations they are set at minus 4mm.

Two different catchers from two set ups. The catcher on the right shows the dead leaf and debris removed from the greens, whilst the catcher on the left is from the greens mower used immediately after the green has been verti cut.

With all this rain the mowers are back out in full operation trying to stay on top. It takes the full week to cut all the roughs (baring no breakdowns) and four days to cut the fairways twice. Greens are cut daily and tees twice per week. It’s a big operation and we really do appreciate your patience whilst we are going about our work.

See you on course.

GOLF NEWS

Member Booking and Tee Sheet Etiquette

We’ve noticed that on two-tee start days (Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday), some groups at the start of the AM and/or PM fields are completing their first nine holes in under two hours, which is fantastic from a pace of play perspective.

However, some of these groups are then moving straight to their second nine before players in the later AM/PM tee times have teed off. This results in some groups commencing their second 9 prior to others beginning their front 9.

As a courtesy to your fellow members, please wait until all groups in the AM/PM fields have teed off their first hole before proceeding to your second nine. This helps maintain fairness and respect for everyone.

Member 'No Show' for Tee Times

We understand that life gets busy and sometimes plans change. However, member no-shows are again on the rise, which at times can leave others without playing partners during competition rounds.

If you’re unable to play, please cancel your booking either through your member login or by calling the Golf Shop, so the team can make the slot available to others.

Your cooperation ensures all members have the opportunity to enjoy their round.

Thank you for your understanding and consideration.

GCDGA Junior Pennant Series 2025

That's a wrap on this year's GCDGA Junior Pennant series.

Both our scratch and handicap teams who represented Links Golf & Wellbeing did so with amazing teamwork, courage and composure.

The scratch team finished a creditable 4th on the ladder with our handicap team finishing in 2nd place in the blue pool, just missing out on the final by one point.

A massive thank you to both our junior pennant managers Ritchie Wise and Nathan Mitchell for your support and donating your time every Sunday over the course of this year’s season. I know the parents and players really appreciate your support.

Ladies Rookie Pennant

Links Golf and Wellbeing is participating in a new event run by Women’s Golf Gold Coast (WGGC). It is known as the Rookies Cup and is open to ladies on higher handicaps with limited to no experience in Match Play. Our squad of six enthusiastic ladies has participated in a few introductory training sessions prior to their first Match last Monday at Coolangatta Tweed.

Despite nerves, hot and windy conditions and one match pre forfeited everyone went out and fought hard to bring home an overall square against the Sanctuary Cove team. Sally Wilkinson had a convincing 5/4 win and Anthea Steans backed her up with a sound 3/2 win. Sharon Vining finished her hard-fought match square but Kathy Forsyth was unable to come away with a win this time. Well done Ladies!

Next Monday the team is off to Southport to battle it out against Tallebudgera.
