Update from the Course

With the rough mowers and fairway units staying in the shed this week it has freed up the staff required to finish off the 18th tee construction project. Once again, I would like to highlight the fact that no financial outlay for this project has occurred as such, with the only cost to the club being the supply and laying of the turf. What was once an unattractive visual way to complete your round of golf will soon be aesthetically pleasing with a new tee and surrounds, turfed areas down to the cart path and a green corridor for the wildlife to inhabit with mass plantings of Pennisetum grasses in amongst the mulched mounds.

As the days get cooler with the seasonal change, we too change the way we look after our playing surfaces about health and nutrition. Traditionally during the growing season the main element in fertiliser, we use is nitrogen (N). This element is used to promote growth and colour. Now with the couch grass going into dormancy we change up the fertilisers used and focus on products with a high potassium (K) element. Potassium creates cell wall hardening in the plant which in turn strengthens the grass during winter. All greens now receive a fortnightly foliar feed with High K, with fairways and tees receiving the same fertiliser monthly.

We continue to feed the soil or profile of the greens on a monthly basis with organics, kelps, carbon, and living bacteria. I’ve recently even gone back to the very old method of spraying the greens with molasses. No, I’m not a nutter!.......... this tried and proven remedy creates a food source for the soil born nematodes to eat rather than sucking the life out of the roots of the turf. Secondly it provides the sugars that the turf is trying to create as a food source during the process of photosynthesis, and thirdly it smells a treat! We apply molasses to the greens each month with Seamungus and Go-Go juice. Everything a healthy profile needs to encourage strong plant growth.

That’s your Horticultural lesson for the week; any questions come and see me after class.

See you on course,
Glenn Beauclerc,
Your Friendly Course Superintendent

What's the Buzz....

Your honey has been delivered to the front desk and is available for purchase. There are 50 bottled jars from last week’s extraction along with a 10kg bucket of honey which we can use to refill any of your old, cleaned honey jars. This will be the last of the honey for a few months as like the grass on the course the bees too go into winter mode and slow right down.

Fun facts:

The queen bee realises that in winter, pollen and nectar flows are at a minimum, so she goes from laying 2000 eggs per day to about 800 eggs, so the hive doesn’t become overcrowded and hungry during winter with no food for the new baby bees.

Winter born bees live for about 60 days whereas Summer and Spring bees live for about 45 days. With not as much work to do in the winter and a lot less flying life’s good if you’re a winter bee!

Life’s not good if you’re a male bee (called a drone) in the hive during winter. As the drones are only good for mating in the spring flights and have no other purpose in the hive they are generally kicked out by all the worker bees (females) and freeze to death.
