Update from the Course

Winter arrived this week with chilly 6-degree mornings greeting us at the maintenance shed. Double layers all round and the beanies were back in fashion too! This week’s cold snap will shut down the growth on all the playing surfaces putting the warm season couch grass into dormancy. The mowing of the roughs and fairways this week will be the last cut for a couple of weeks freeing up staff to start our winter job list.

We have completed the first round of bunker refurbishments with the green side bunkers on the 4th hole now back in play after proving a little troublesome due to blocked, broken and inadequate drainage installed on this hole. They now look sensational, but as with all the bunkers we have put new sand in, are susceptible to plugging in the short term. What you have to remember is that all these bunkers previously had no sand on the face and what the ball was landing on was the geofabric bunker lining on the walls of these bunkers. Now there is 50mm of sand on the faces which like every construction job will take time to settle in. Once again if you can restrain from walking in or out of these faces the sand will compact quicker.

What's the Buzz.....

The bees have once again been working their butts off making the most of any sunny days on offer. After 3 inspections over the past 6 weeks, I thought they might have slowed down coming into Winter and the cool change. Once again, I was wrong, and they’ve filled all their frames with honey forcing our hand into an extraction last Saturday. We only took half the frames from each hive as these honey frames also provide insulation and a food source during Winter.

In all we extracted 46kg from the 20 frames, leaving plenty in reserve for the bees to survive the coming cool months.

I will have this honey bottled and ready for purchase next Tuesday.

Cart Policy Reminder

As we enter the cooler months and temperatures drop the grass on course will enter winter dormancy.  With this in mind, along with the fact we have experienced one of the wettest Autumn's on record, we would like to remind members of our cart rule. Please remember to stay on the cart paths, enter the fairways at 90 degrees and where possible drive in the rough in between shots to reach the green. Please also ensure you follow all cart directional signage and obey the Blue Lines.  Adhering to policy should ensure members are able to continue riding in single carts and if this is important to you, please politely remind anyone you see doing the wrong thing to obey the rules or inform the Golf Shop.

Thank you for your support in keeping playing surfaces in the best possible condition during the winter season.
