Update from the Course

Just when you think the course is drying out the inevitable happens………...it rains again. The 20mm in the gauge Sunday morning came after 49 mm was emptied over the Wednesday / Thursday period. In total 94 mm for the month of July and the year-to-date level stands at 1481mm, nearly 1.5m of rainfall on course. With daytime temperatures in the low 20’s and tree lined fairways we are simply not drying out. As a result of this we have now introduced a ‘Carts on path policy for the 6th hole.’ This hole in particular down the Left-Hand Side is in full shade and I fear that consistent cart traffic with no turf recovery could see a decline in playability even into the new spring growth. So, until further notice we will endeavour to keep ALL CARTS on the path until the area has dried out and recovered.

We will aid in this drying process with mechanical aeration and dusting (see photos below, aeration with 6mm tines punching to a depth of 75mm). As with all areas on course that have been roped off or pegged out, please use common sense and stay away. Our one objective for these areas is simple……. Provide you the golfer with better playing surfaces throughout the course.

Another big job for our irrigation technician this week with the 250mm poly mainline splitting on the 9th tees near the pump shed. This is the direct feed from the pump shed to the entire course so obviously it was the biggest priority of the week. A full replacement of tee pieces, couplings and joiners was required all of which had to be poly welded.

Despite the weather gods being against us the course is holding up really well. The rye grass seed we planted the 2nd, 7th and 12th tees had a 100% strike and looks far more inviting than what was previously there. The couch on these tees was struggling with the wet conditions and full shade hence the oversow. The greens have a terrific coverage and a vibrant look about them for a dormant surface. We continue to mow them only on a Tuesday and Saturday with rolling taking place on the other days. Rolling is a lot less stressful on the grass than mowing, plus it puts more speed into the surface through compaction so it’s a win win situation during these cooler months.

A really big thankyou to all the members who go out of their way to pass on complements regarding the course condition. There have been plenty of late and your positive feedback goes a long way to increasing morale in the maintenance shed, so thank you very much.

See you on course,
Glenn Beauclerc.
Your Friendly Course Superintendent.
