GOLF NEWS

Rookie Pennant Results

A great team win for the Ladies at Southport against Tallebudgera this week! Despite the rain setting in after the first few holes, everyone fought hard with 2 of the matches going down to the last hole. Sally Wilkinson finished 1 up while Kathy Forsyth fought to the end to finish 1 down. Great wins to Sharon Vining 4&2, Trish Arbuckle 3&1 and Anthea Steans 5&3.

With only 2 rounds to go in the competition, we are sitting clear at the top of the table! Next week the matches will be at Sanctuary Cove where we will take on Surfers Paradise. This will be our final round as we have a bye for the last round, which will take place at the Links. This will be a day for everyone to celebrate with lunch and presentation.

A special thankyou to Jen Stanley and Jean Cox who volunteered their time at Southport to act as advisors for ladies still discovering Match Play.

Members Summer Chook Run

Back by popular demand, starting Friday, 5th December, our Summer Chook Run returns!

Join us every Friday throughout the series for a 9-hole Ambrose with a 3pm shotgun start, followed by light nibbles and presentations.

It’s the perfect way to wrap up the week - a fun, light-hearted afternoon filled with plenty of laughs, good company, and great times on the course.

We can’t wait to see you all out there!

Member Booking and Tee Sheet Etiquette

We’ve noticed that on two-tee start days (Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday), some groups at the start of the AM and/or PM fields are completing their first nine holes in under two hours, which is fantastic from a pace of play perspective.

However, some of these groups are then moving straight to their second nine before players in the later AM/PM tee times have teed off. This results in some groups commencing their second 9 prior to others beginning their front 9.

As a courtesy to your fellow members, please wait until all groups in the AM/PM fields have teed off their first hole before proceeding to your second nine. This helps maintain fairness and respect for everyone.

Member 'No Show' for Tee Times

We understand that life gets busy and sometimes plans change. However, member no-shows are again on the rise, which at times can leave others without playing partners during competition rounds.

If you’re unable to play, please cancel your booking either through your member login or by calling the Golf Shop, so the team can make the slot available to others.

Your cooperation ensures all members have the opportunity to enjoy their round.

Thank you for your understanding and consideration.

From the Course....

Besides setting up for course renovations the team has been flat out trying to stay on top of the growth that has jumped out of the ground over the past week. The rain and recent fertiliser programmes have certainly seen the course green up incredibly, setting us up for a successful renovation.

Only two things will affect how successful next week goes and that is machinery breakdowns and weather. The first one I’m confident with as Andy our course mechanic has serviced, pulled down, rebuilt, greased and oiled every machine required to be operated at full revs for 12-hour days. The second being weather I have no control over, and the long-range forecast looks awful for the Sunday / Monday period. Any rain at all during renovations sets us back days as the material removed is too wet to pick up. Here’s hoping the weather gods shine on us for the week.

We have completed the removal of the bitumen and tree roots from the cart paths throughout the course as part of our upgrade of driving conditions. These areas have been cut out with a wet saw, tree roots dug out with an excavator before the site was compacted in preparation for the arrival of new bitumen.  These areas with be resealed next Wednesday during course renovations as not to affect any golfers or play.

A big thankyou to Jason our horticulturist who literally went above and beyond this week pruning all the palm trees around the clubhouse. We hired a 10m knuckle boom to get Jason where he needed to be in both comfort and safety. It was a massive task carried out with pride and professionalism. Well done mate!

This year’s annual course renovations start 1pm Sunday the 16th of November. As previously outlined, this is by far the most important agronomical week of the year on the golf course. What we achieve and how we achieve it sets up the growing and playing conditions for the course over the following 12 months.

This year we will be scarifying greens, tees, fairways and green surrounds, aerating greens and tees, and slicing fairways. All these practices are required for the removal of mat and thatch from the playing surfaces. The breakdown of each procedure is as follows:

Greens:

  • Scarified at -4mm up and back the same run going over the green in two opposite directions. Catchers on which will be emptied into tractor/trailer combo.
  • Green mowed off at current height of cut 3.5mm
  • Aerated with the Verti drain using 13mm hollow tines to a depth of 75mm
  • Cores picked up with core harvestor
  • Amendments applied
  • Top-dressed with sand / gypsum / profile blend
  • Broomed in
  • Start Sunday – complete Wednesday.

Tees:

  • Scarified at -10mm up and back the same run going over the tee in two different directions. Scarifying heads on fairway unit.
  • Scarifyings blown off with turbine blowers
  • Tee mowed off at current height of cut 8mm
  • Aerated with the Verti drain using 13mm hollow tines to a depth of 75mm
  • Cores rubbed in with wire mats
  • Amendments applied
  • Top-dressed with sand / gypsum / profile blend
  • Broomed in
  • Start Sunday – Complete Wednesday

Fairways:

  • Scarified at -10mm up and back the same run. Maredo tow behind scarifier.
  • Scarifyings picked up with 2 tow- behind raker vacs
  • Fairways mowed off at current height of cut 12mm
  • Fairways sliced to a depth of 50mm with tow- behind fairway slicer
  • Fertiliser and amendments applied
  • Start Sunday - Complete Thursday

Green Surrounds:

  • Scarified at -10mm going around each surround 3 times in both directions. Scarifying heads on fairway unit.
  • Scarifyings blown off with turbine blowers, surrounds mowed off at current height of cut 12mm
  • Surrounds sliced to a depth of 50mm with tow- behind fairway slicer
  • Fertiliser and amendments applied
  • Start Sunday – Complete Thursday

See you on course,
Glenn Beauclerc.
Your Friendly Course Superintendent.
